A paintbox is a small box that holds dry cakes or pans of paint, usually watercolour. You wet a brush, touch the dry paint, and the colour comes off so you can paint on paper. Children and beginners often have one; artists may use a finer one. It is not a tin of wall paint, and it is not a set of oil tubes in a bag. The word is ordinary and a little old-fashioned in some places — people also say watercolour set — but it is still clear. The picture it gives is the hinged box you open on a desk.
