Pagination is the work of giving each page a number, and also the numbering you end up with. In a book or magazine, it is those 1, 2, 3 marks and the plan of what sits on each sheet. If the pagination is wrong, page 10 might come after page 12, and readers get lost. Publishers, printers, and people who make long documents use this word. It is an office and print noun, a little dry. Though actually, people sometimes say pagination when they only mean the page number in the corner, but the fuller meaning is the whole arrangement of pages, not just one figure. On websites, people also use it for the row of page numbers at the bottom of a list — that is a later, looser use of the same word. The verb next to it is paginate.
