    Pacifism is the belief that war and violence are always wrong — not just this time, but wrong as a way of settling things. A person who holds this belief is a pacifist. Some refuse to join an army because of it; some work for peace in public life. It is a moral and political stance, not the same as being shy or simply "not liking loud voices." Though actually, people argue about how far it goes: is all force always wrong, or only war between countries? The tidy dictionary says "always," and that is the core of the word; real pacifists have not all drawn the line in the same place. You meet the word in news, history, and ethics, not much in playground talk.
