Overground describes a train that runs on the surface — on tracks you can see — rather than down in a tunnel. It is the pair of underground (the Tube in London; 地下鐵). In British English it is both an ordinary adjective (an overground train, overground lines) and a proper name: London’s Overground is the orange network on the map. The word is doing a simple job: over the ground, not under it. Though actually, people outside Britain rarely need it. In Taiwan we talk about 地下 and 高架 or 地面段; we do not walk around saying overground. If you meet it, it is usually Britain, and it is about trains, not about walking “on the ground” in general.
