To overcompensate is to try to fix a weakness, a fear, or a mistake by going too far the other way. Someone who feels small may talk too loud. A driver who turns too little may pull the wheel hard the other way and overcompensate. Parents who were treated strictly as children sometimes overcompensate by letting their own kids do anything. It is a bit formal, but news, everyday talk, and people who study behaviour all use it. The idea is not “pay money.” Compensate here means “make up for,” and over- means you make up for it too much, so you can create a new problem.
