    If a dish, plate, or bowl is ovenproof, you can put it in a hot oven and it will not crack, melt, or break from the heat. Glass, ceramic, and metal can all be ovenproof — but only if the maker says so. A pretty plate from the table is often not ovenproof; a sudden jump in heat can split it. Microwave-safe is a different claim: a bowl can be fine in a microwave and still be wrong for an oven. The -proof here means “protected against,” the same idea as waterproof (protected against water) or fireproof. You will see the word on more than in stories. It describes the dish, not the food inside it.
