A building, a door, a piece of cloth, or a box that is fireproof is made so that flames cannot burn it badly — or, people hope, cannot burn it at all. Builders put fireproof doors on the so a fire in one room does not race through the whole block. Some work clothes, theatre curtains, and kitchen blankets are called fireproof too, so a spark does not turn into a disaster. You will also hear it as a verb: to fireproof a wall is to treat it or cover it so fire cannot eat it easily. The ending -proof is the same idea as in waterproof: “this can stand up to X.” Though actually, the tidy word is tidier than life. A lot of things sold as fireproof will still be ruined in a very, very hot fire; they just last much longer than ordinary wood or cotton. Careful people sometimes say fire-resistant when they want to be exact. The word feels practical, not poetic — labels, building rules, insurance.
