Osteoarthritis is a long medical name for a very common joint problem. Inside a joint, the smooth ends of the bones can wear down with time and use. The joint then gets stiff and sore — knees, hips, hands, and the spine are the usual places. Mornings can be the worst; cold weather does not help; stairs and jars with tight lids become slow work. It is not an infection you catch from someone else. It is wear, and the body’s repair not quite keeping up. Older people get it more, though actually a joint that was badly hurt years ago can get it younger too. Doctors in Taiwan often say 退化性關節炎, “wearing-out arthritis”, which is the same condition under a plainer name. It is not the same as rheumatoid arthritis, where the immune system attacks the joint, and it is not the same as osteoporosis, where the bone itself becomes thin and breaks. This one is about the joint surface, not about bones turning hollow.
