An osteopath is a person trained to treat people using osteopathy: they use their hands on muscles, joints, and bones — pressing, stretching, moving — especially for back and neck pain. You lie on a couch; they are not doing an operation and they are not mainly giving pills. In Britain this is a recognised kind of health worker. They are not the same as an orthopaedic surgeon, who can cut and mend bone in hospital, and they are not exactly the same as a physiotherapist or a chiropractor, though from the outside the work can look similar. Though actually, in Taiwan you will meet the English word less often. People here more often go to 骨科, 復健科, or a 整脊 clinic. If you translate osteopath as 整骨, a student may picture a traditional 接骨師傅, which is a different craft with a long local history. An osteopath in the Western sense is a trained practitioner of osteopathy, not automatically “the bone doctor” in a Taiwan hospital.
