Arthritis is a disease of the joints — the places where two bones meet, like knees, fingers, hips, and the back. The joint swells, gets stiff, and hurts, often more in the morning or when the weather is cold and damp. This is a serious medical word, not a casual name for any sore knee. There is not just one kind: the common kind that comes with age and wear is different from the kind where the body's own defences attack the joints. People sometimes say “I have arthritis” for any old joint pain; that is a loose everyday use, and a doctor would want to know which kind. You cannot catch it like a cold.
