Orthorexic describes that same extreme wish to eat only food you believe is healthy — the wish that can shrink someone’s diet until they are not eating enough. As an adjective, an orthorexic rule or diet is one ruled by that fear of “unpure” food. As a noun, an orthorexic is a person caught in it. Though actually, like orthorexia, this is a newer word, more at home in health writing and conversation than in every textbook. People stretch it: “That’s a bit orthorexic” may only mean “you are being very fussy about clean eating,” even when no one is in danger. For a learner, keep the serious meaning (harm) and the loose, jokey meaning apart.
