Orthorexia is when the wish to eat “only healthy food” grows so strong that it starts to harm the person. It is not simply liking vegetables or reading labels. The person may cut out more and more foods, feel afraid of anything they think is unclean or not pure, and end up eating too little, or only a very narrow list. Though actually, this is a fairly new word, built on the same -orexia piece as anorexia, to name a problem that looks like care but behaves like a trap. It is not listed as a sealed official diagnosis in every medical book, so some doctors use it carefully, as a useful name rather than a finished label. People also joke “I’m so orthorexic” about buying organic snacks; that joke is loose. The serious use is about harm, not about being a little fussy.
