1. 1

An orthopedist is a doctor with special training in orthopedics: bones, joints, and the soft parts that hold them together. They set breaks, replace hips and knees, and treat sports injuries. Though actually, many people say orthopedic surgeon instead, because a large part of the job is operating, not only giving advice. In casual talk someone may say bone doctor; that is friendly, not the formal title. The British spelling of the job name is often orthopaedist. This is a hospital specialist, not a general family doctor who happens to look at a sprain.
