Orthographically means “if we look at the letters on the page” — the spelling, not the sound and not the meaning. Two words can be said the same way but still be different orthographically: British colour and American color are like that. Though actually, almost nobody uses this word in ordinary talk. You will meet it in language class, in careful academic writing, or when someone wants to be very exact. It is an adverb, so it tells you how we are judging the word: we are judging the spelling. It does not mean “correctly.” A sentence can be wrong orthographically (the letters are off) even when the speaker’s idea is clear.

組成orthographical (“about correct spelling”) + -ly (makes an adverb). The longer root is ortho- (“straight, correct”) + graph (“writing”).
