Orienteering is a sport. You are put in a place you do not know — often woods, hills, or open country — and you must find a set of hidden points in the right order, as fast as you can. You get a map and a compass, and you choose your own path. It is not a race along a painted track; the skill is reading the land and not getting lost while you still move quickly. Schools and clubs use it a lot in Europe, and you may meet it in PE or at camp. Though actually, there are city versions now too, and some events let you go in pairs. When you mean the sport, you do not put a or an in front: she does orienteering. People also say an orienteering event for one race.
