    If something is ordered, it is well arranged or controlled: things in their places, a clear sequence, not a mess. An ordered desk, an ordered classroom, an ordered list. It can also describe a way of living or a whole society that follows rules and does not slip into chaos. This entry is that adjective. Though actually, ordered is also the ordinary past of the verb order — I ordered soup, the officer ordered them to stop — so the same spelling does two very different jobs. In maths you will meet ordered pair and ordered list, where the sequence itself matters: (2, 5) is not (5, 2).
