An optimist is someone who believes that good things will happen, or who looks for the bright side. You can say it kindly ('she's an optimist') or with a small smile, as if the person hopes a little too easily. It names the person; optimism names the attitude; optimistic describes the feeling or the view. An optimist can still plan carefully — the word is about what they expect, not about being careless. It has nothing to do with glasses or eyes, even though optician sits nearby on the page.
