Optimism is a habit of mind: a tendency to believe that good things will happen, or that a situation will turn out well. An optimistic person is not only hoping for one nice afternoon; they tend to look on the bright side as a rule. English also uses it for a general public mood ('there is optimism about the talks'). It is not a political system, even though it ends in -; here - means 'a way of thinking.' The opposite is .
