An oceanographer is a scientist whose job is the ocean. They study the water itself: , currents, temperature, salt, the shape of the sea floor, and how the ocean and the weather push on each other. This is the person, not the subject. The subject is oceanography — the name of the science. You might picture someone on a research ship, dropping instruments into deep water, or sitting with maps and computer models of the whole sea. The word is formal and belongs to science and news, not to small talk. Though actually, the work overlaps with other sea sciences: a marine biologist looks especially at living things in the sea, while an oceanographer may look at the water, the chemistry, and the sea floor as well as the life. The edges are not perfectly tidy.
