Oceanography is the scientific study of the ocean: the water, the , the currents, the chemistry, the sea floor, and how the ocean and the air above it shape each other. It is a university subject and a job field, not an everyday word at the dinner table. Though actually, it is not simply “studying fish.” The study of living things in the sea is more often called marine biology. Oceanography is wider — it can include the physics of , the salt in the water, the mountains under the sea, and the life as well. People sometimes treat the two as the same; the overlap is real, but the centre of each word is different. An is the person who does this science.
組成From ocean + -ography. Ocean goes back to Ancient Greek Ōkeanós (the great sea around the world), through Latin Ōceanus and Old French, into English ocean. The ending -ography comes from Greek graphē (“writing”) by way of French -graphie. Put together, the word means writing about — describing — the ocean.
