    Obstetrics is the part of medicine that deals with pregnancy, labour, and birth. The word looks plural, like mathematics or physics, but we treat it as one field: “Obstetrics is hard work.” In hospitals it often sits next to gynecology. Obstetrics is the baby-and-birth side; gynecology is women’s reproductive health more generally. Students and doctors it to OB. It is textbook and hospital language more than kitchen-table language.
