Obstetric is the adjective for the kind of medicine that looks after a woman during pregnancy and at the birth of a baby. Doctors and nurses use it in set phrases: obstetric care, an obstetric ward, obstetric history. Ordinary people more often say maternity in everyday talk; obstetric sounds like hospital language. It is not a word for all of women’s health. That wider field is gynecology. Obstetric is the pregnancy, labour, and first days after birth.
