Obduracy is a name for a hard, unmoving way of being. Someone will not change what they believe, what they do, or how they feel, even when other people think they should — and that holding-on, when it feels too hard and not fair, is obduracy. The word is not kind. It does not mean healthy strength; it suggests the person has gone stiff on purpose. You would not use it for a child who will not put on a coat. It belongs in serious talk and in books, about someone who will not give way. Though actually, it is rather rare now. Most people just say stubbornness. Obduracy sounds heavier, as if the heart itself has turned hard.
