NY is the written short form of New York. It can mean New York City or New York State — the city sits inside the state, and the state is much bigger. You see NY on letters, airport boards, and forms. People almost always say “New York” out loud, not “NY,” except in quick names like . Though actually, this is easy to mix with NYC: NY is the wider label and can be city or state; if a writer wants to be clear they mean only the city, they often write NYC. Albany is in NY the state; Manhattan is in NY the city.
