NYC is the written short form of New York City — the city, not the whole state of New York. People write it in texts, headlines, and on bags and shirts. Some people do say “NYC” out loud, especially younger speakers and in songs or TV, but “New York” is still the normal spoken name. Use NYC when you need to keep the city separate from New York State ( towns, farms, the capital Albany). Though actually, many people still say “New York” for the city alone; NYC is the clearer label on the page.
