Numerate is the adjective that goes with numeracy, the way literate goes with literacy. A numerate person can do simple calculations and is not lost when life is written in figures: a price, a percentage, a graph in the paper. They may still dislike maths class. The word is about coping with numbers, not loving them. It was coined in 1959, on purpose, to mirror literate. Before that, English had no neat partner for “” on the number side. The opposite, , exists too, but it belongs even more to reports and speeches than to ordinary talk. There is an older, rare verb numerate, “to count,” from Latin. Almost nobody uses it now. If you meet numerate in a newspaper, a job ad, or a school prospectus, it means “good with numbers.”
