The NUM is a British trade union for miners and other people who work in mining. For a long time it was a big, powerful union in the UK. In 1984 and 1985 there was a long, bitter miners' strike. After that fight, and after many mines closed, the NUM lost a great deal of power and became much smaller. The letters stand for National Union of . This is a UK story; Taiwan does not have this union. Though actually, you may also see num as a short way to write 'number,' but that is a different word with the same letters, not this union.
