    Nottinghamshire is a county in central England. A lot of it is . It was also known for coal mines, though most of those mines have now closed. The main city is Nottingham. British people, and British newspapers, often the county to Notts. Sherwood Forest, from the Robin Hood stories, is in this county. Though actually, shire is just an old English word for a county, so this name is the same kind of name as Yorkshire or Lancashire: a place plus -shire.
