    Norway is a country in northern Europe, on the west side of . Its capital is Oslo. An older learner's book may still say about 4.7 million people (2014); though actually more than five million people live there now. The land is famous for : long, narrow arms of the sea between high cliffs. Its work has long included fishing, oil from under the North Sea, and wood from large forests. It is a rich, northern country, often cold, with a long coast and a lot of empty wild land. In English we say Norway for the country; the people and the language are Norwegian. That split is worth learning early, because many country names do both jobs with one word, and this one does not.

組成From Old English Norþweġ, copying Old Norse Norðvegr, north way — norðr (north) + vegr (way). Equivalent to North + way. The old north way was this coast; they contrasted it with a south way (roughly Germany) and an east way (the Baltic lands).
