    Something nonexistent does not exist at all, or is not there in the place you mean. The file is nonexistent: nobody made it. Public buses there are nonexistent: you will not find that service. People also stretch it when the real amount is so small it might as well be zero: My free time is nonexistent this week. That stretch is common and a bit dramatic; careful writing keeps it for things that truly are not there. You will see the non-existent too; both spellings are used. The tone is ordinary-to-formal, fine in news and in complaint.
