One way to hold it: stand at the shore and watch the water. A wave is not one drop — it is a lot of them arriving together, behind the wave before it, pushing whatever is on the sand. New wave puts people in the water: a set of them showing up at the same time in film or music or , with ideas the last wave did not have. Everything else on this page is that picture, either frozen onto one famous wave or used as a label for whatever is arriving now.

Wiktionary records the capitalised New Wave as a calque of French Nouvelle Vague, first used of a group of new film-makers; vague is the ordinary French word for a wave, so the water picture is in the phrase from the start.
