    A necktie is a man’s tie: the long, fairly narrow piece of cloth that is under the collar and hangs down the front of a shirt. Necktie is the full, clear word; in everyday American and British English most people just say tie. Necktie is a little more old-fashioned, or more complete — you still see it on shop labels and in older writing. Women wear ties too, but the traditional picture is a man’s dress tie. It is not a bow tie (that one is tied in a bow) and not a (that one is a square of cloth).
