In British English, the nearside of a vehicle is the side that sits closest to the edge of the road — the , the pavement, the shops. Britain drives on the left, so that side is the left side of the car. The other side, nearer the middle of the road, is the offside. You will hear this in driving lessons, accident reports, and car ads: a scratch on the nearside door, the nearside wing mirror, the nearside lane. Though actually, it is not a fancy word: it is just near + side, the side that is near the . Americans almost never say it. They say the passenger side or the driver's side, or simply left and right. And careful: which side counts as 'near the road's edge' depends on which side of the road you drive on. In Britain it is the left. In a country that drives on the right, the same idea would point the other way — but people there do not use this word anyway.
