    The nave is the long middle part of a church — the big open hall where people sit or stand, from the door up toward the front. The thinner parts along the sides are not the nave; the nave is the centre. It is a special word for church buildings. You will not use it about a school hall or a train. Though actually the word is the Latin word for a ship. In some old churches the wooden roof can look a little like the inside of a boat turned upside down; whether or not that picture is why the name stuck, the Latin is the same navis that gives us navy. There is another English word spelled nave, the hub at the centre of a wheel, but that is a different word from an old Germanic root meaning navel / hub, not this church word. Same spelling, different life.
