Naturalistic describes a painting, a play, a story, or an acting style made according to : it tries to look and feel like real life, not like a fairy tale or a stiff old stage. A naturalistic set might be a real-looking kitchen. A naturalistic portrait shows the face as it is, including tired skin. The word is built from natural + -istic, or from naturalist + -ic — both roads are used, and they land on the same word. People also stretch it: a zoo may build a “naturalistic” home for an animal, meaning it looks like the wild, not a bare cage. That stretch is common, even though the older home of the word is art and writing. It does not simply mean “about nature,” and it is not the same as natural.
組成From natural + -istic, or from naturalist + -ic. Both analyses are given; they land on the same word.
