Naturalism is a style of art or literature that tries to show the world and people exactly as they are — not prettier, not more heroic, not like a dream. A novel in this style may show hard jobs, poor streets, and people who do not win. A painter in this style looks hard at light, skin, dirt, and ordinary rooms. The name is simply natural + - (a system or style). French used naturalisme for a close cousin of this idea, and English followed that shape. Though actually, philosophy uses the same word for a different claim: that only the natural world is real. In an art or reading class, though, naturalism means the “show it as it is” style. It is not the study of plants and animals, and it is not (the idea) — that is a different word.
