Nanotechnology is the science of developing and making extremely small but powerful things — at the scale of a nanometre, a billionth of a metre. The tidy picture is tiny machines. Though actually, a lot of real nanotechnology is not little robots. It is materials, coatings, medicines, and computer parts whose pieces are that small. The word is nano- plus technology, and it became widely known after Eric Drexler wrote about it in 1986. You will hear it in science class and in the news. also stretch it: 'nano' on a bottle does not always mean much.
