A nanosecond is a unit of time: one billionth of a second. There are a billion nanoseconds in one second. That is so short that even light only travels about thirty in one nanosecond. Scientists and computer people use the word as a real measurement. Though actually, in ordinary talk people stretch it: 'I'll be back in a nanosecond' just means 'very, very soon', the same kind of joke as 'in a second'. Nano- means a billionth, not a billion. A billion seconds would be a very long time.
