If something is mutable, it can change, or it is the sort of thing that often changes. Feelings, plans, and the weather are mutable. In careful or older English, people used it for luck and for human moods — the idea that nothing stays. Today you still hear it in writing, but you will hear it most in two special places: biology (a mutable gene can change) and computers (a mutable value is one your program may ). Programmers talk about mutable and immutable all the time. Though actually, calling a person “mutable” can sound a little like a book; everyday English might just say they change their mind a lot. The word is almost always an adjective.
