This is one of the strongest rude words in English. It names a person you hate, or someone who has just made you furious. Do not say it. Do not write it in class, in a message to a teacher, or at work. It is mother + fucker, attested since 1918, and the original insult is a claim that the person sleeps with their own mother — that is why it cuts so deep. Though actually, many people now throw it without picturing that at all. It can mean “a terrible person,” “a difficult thing” (this motherfucker won’t start), or just a burst of anger. In some groups of friends, especially in some American speech, it can even sound almost warm, like a rough nickname. That is the messy truth, and it is still not safe for you. If you are not a native speaker, this word will not make you sound cool. It will make you sound shocking, or worse.
