- 1
When someone borrows money to buy a house, two sides sit in the deal. The mortgagee is the side that lends the money — nearly always a bank, a building society, or another lender. In return they hold a legal hold on the house until the loan is paid back. If the payments stop, the mortgagee can take the house and sell it. The word lives in contracts and bank paperwork more than at the kitchen table; ordinary people usually just say “the bank” or “the lender.” Though actually the ending -ee tricks people. In employee it is the worker, so students often guess the mortgagee is the buyer. In this old legal pairing it is the other way round: the buyer who borrows is the ; the mortgagee is the one who put the money up.
抵押權人(放貸的一方,多半是銀行。口語常直接說「銀行」)
