Monomania is a very strong interest in one idea or one subject, so strong that other thoughts cannot get in. In older medical books it named a kind of madness built around a single thing. Doctors today almost never use it as a formal label; the word has moved into ordinary, slightly literary English. You might hear that someone has a monomania for a game, for making money, or for one political idea — meaning they cannot drop it, and it starts to crowd out the rest of life. Though actually, loving one thing a lot is not monomania. The word is for when the interest becomes a trap. It sounds serious and a little old. Be gentle with it: used on a real person, it can sting.
