A monograph is a short book, or a long serious article, that stays with one subject and looks at it in detail. A scholar might write a monograph on one poet, one bird, one law, or one small piece of history. It is not a school textbook that tries to cover everything, and it is not a light magazine piece. You meet the word in universities, libraries, and academic catalogues; almost nobody uses it in the street. There is also a rarer verb, to monograph something, meaning to write that kind of study about it, but the noun is the form you will actually see. Though actually, people sometimes stretch the word and call any long paper a monograph, even when it is only one article in a journal. The tidy idea is still: one writer, one subject, written out with care.
