  1. 1臼齒。日常也說大牙。化學課另一個 molar 是「莫耳的」（台灣寫莫耳，大陸寫摩爾），不是牙齒。

    A molar is one of the large teeth at the back of the mouth, made for grinding food, not for cutting it. The front teeth bite a piece off; the molars crush it. Adults can have twelve if all of them come in — three on each side, top and bottom. Though actually the last ones are wisdom teeth, and many people never get a full set, or they have them taken out. As an adjective, molar can mean “of those teeth”: a molar cavity, a molar extraction.

    The name comes from a Latin word for millstone, because these teeth crush like a mill.

    Chemistry class has another word that only looks the same. That molar belongs to the mole, the chemist’s counting unit for atoms. You meet molar mass and molar concentration. These two molars did not start as one idea. In the dentist’s chair, molar is a tooth.
