Picture two heavy stones turning against each other with grain between them: whatever goes in comes out crushed and changed. That grinding is the heart of the word — the building, the factory, the little pepper and the verb are all the same action at different sizes. Two senses in this entry are a different word entirely.

From the word’s history

Mill 'grinding building' is from Old English mylen, Late Latin molina, from Latin mola 'millstone' and molere 'to grind'. The money sense is a separate word: mill 'one tenth of a cent' was coined in the U.S. in 1786 from Latin millesimum 'one-thousandth part' (mille 'a thousand'), formed on the analogy of cent.
