    「modem」在台灣最自然的說法是「數據機」——幫忙電腦把資料送到電話線或纜線上，再讓另一台電腦／網路聽得懂。常見搭配：cable modem（纜線數據機）、external modem（外接數據機）、use a modem（用數據機）。核心畫面可以想成「電腦跟線路之間的翻譯小盒子」：一邊是電腦的訊號，一邊是線路能帶的訊號，modem 站在中間幫忙兩邊溝通。跟 router（路由器）分開記——router 管「怎麼轉送」；modem 先把訊號變成線路能走的樣子。
