A router is a small box of electronics that sits between computers and the wider net. It looks at each message and sends it along a path — a route — to the right computer or the right network, so the sending is easier and faster than if every machine had to find the way alone. At home, the Wi-Fi box people point at is often a router, or a and router in one. Offices and the internet itself are full of bigger ones. The word is everyday tech English; in Taiwan people sometimes say the English word, but the name on the box in the shop is Chinese. Though actually, English also uses router for a woodworking tool that cuts grooves. That is a different machine, from a different history (rout, to dig out). This entry is the network box, from route plus -er.
