A mockumentary is a funny film or TV show that pretends to be a documentary. You get the interviews, the shaky camera, the serious voice — all the clothes of a real “this happened” film — but the people and events are made up. The joke is often that everyone on screen treats nonsense as if it were deadly serious, and you are in on the game. It is a noun, used in film and TV talk, playful rather than stiff. Though actually, not every mockumentary is light. The fake-documentary shape can carry a sharp or sad story, not only jokes. And a real documentary that happens to be funny is still a documentary. A mockumentary wants you to notice the pretence; it is not the same as fake news meant to fool you.
