Mockney is about a fake East London voice — or the person putting that voice on. Cockney is the old working-class way of talking from the East End of London. A mockney speaker copies the dropped letters, the street jokes, the “I’m one of you” sound, but they did not grow up there and they are not working class. People in Britain use the word for pop stars, actors, and well-off kids who suddenly sound like a market seller. It is not a kind word, though it can be said with a laugh. It can name the accent (a mockney accent), the person (a mockney), or the whole put-on style. Informal, and very British; you will hardly need it outside stories about fame and class. Though actually, a good actor doing Cockney for a film part is just acting. People usually reach for mockney when the voice feels like a costume in real life — when someone wants to seem cooler, tougher, or more “of the people” than they are. It is not any British accent, and it is not the real East End speech it copies.
