To mispronounce a word is to say it the wrong way — wrong sound, wrong stress, or a letter said that should stay silent. You mispronounce a word or, very often, a name, and mispronouncing someone's name is the use you will meet most: 'the teacher mispronounced my name all year'. It is a plain, neutral verb, not an insult. In fact English speakers use it apologetically about themselves — 'sorry, I'm probably mispronouncing this' — before trying a foreign word. The noun is mispronunciation, and watch it: the verb has 'nounce' but the noun has 'nun'. Two things worth knowing about how the word is really used. It suggests there is one right way to say something, and often there is more than one — British and American English disagree constantly, and neither is a mispronunciation. And among teachers today it is a word used carefully, because a learner's accent is not the same thing as a mistake.
